Adams¿ Company was stopped in their attempt to break through the Mortagne Forest in an attempt to reopen a supply line to the isolated 3rd Battalion. With his unit stopped with 3 dead and 6 wounded in an attack that had only gained them 10 yards, Sgt. Adams single-handedly attacked the large German force. Dodging from tree to tree he made it to within ten yards of the first machine gun nest and wiped it out with grenades. He then charged through heavy fire to within a few yards where a German was throwing grenades at him. He killed this soldier and another with a grenade, forcing two more Germans to surrender the machinegun position. Still under heavy fire he ran thought the woods and killed five more of the enemy. He then attacked the third machine gun nest and killed the gunner. In total he destroyed three machine gun nests and killed nine of the enemy. In doing this he cleared supply line and for this action was awarded the Medal of Honor. Besides the Medal of Honor Adams received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his actions during the Casino Campaign in Italy.
