(1867-1936) (295, web) British Lt. General. Asser entered the Royal Artillery in 1887 and in 1892 joined the Egyptian Army and served in the Nile Campaign (1897-98) as a Brigade Major of the 3rd Egyptian Brigade at the Battles of Atbara and Omdurman in 1898. The Battle of Atbara was the turning point of the Second Sudan War and the conquest of Sudan. The British and Egyptian forces attacked 15,000 Sudanese rebels known as Mahdists or Dervishes. The British were camped along the Nile with the Mahdists moving north and were within 20 miles away. When General Kitchener realized the enemy would not attack he quietly advanced on them, first bombing them with artillery and then attacking in hand-to-hand combat. Within 45 minutes over 10,000 Dervishes were killed or captured with only about 2,000 escaping south. Kitchener's next important attack was on Omdurman where his forces consisted of 8,000 English and 17,000 Egyptian/Sudanese forces against 50,000 Dervishes. On the first day of battle the Dervishes made a frontal attack and lost close to 20,000 men without even reaching the British lines. Kitchner wanted to take Omdurman before the remaining 30,000 Dervishes were able to withdraw to it. He sent a force of 400 lancers thinking there were only a few hundred protecting the city. Instead they found 3000 troops and in heavy fighting the city was taken. The Dervishes again attacked and in heavy fighting lost 10,000 killed, 13,000 wounded and 5,000 captured with a British loss of 48 men and 382 wounded. Asser Commanded the Campaign in southern Kordofan in 1910 and for a number of years was a member of the Governor-General's Council with the rank of..?...liwa. He served throughout WW I as a Major General and took part in a number of battles including Flanders. In 1926 he was promoted to General. Asser was appointed Governor of Bermuda (1922-27) where he introduced the first police force. Very Fine Dark Sig. "J. J. Governor & Commander in Chief- Bermuda - 16 Oct. 1923"
