(1918-2005)Army Officer, awarded the MOH for his actions at Oliveto, Italy, Sept. 23, 1943, during the Naples-Foggia Campaign (my father fought in the Battle of Naples-Foggia J.A.). While crossing a bridge Childers fell thru and fractured his foot, the noise of which caused him to come under attack by a machine gunner who he crawled up to and killed. Ordered to return to the aid station, and while he was waiting to see a doctor, the aid station was blown up, he was again injured and the doctor and others killed. Childers crawled off to the battle and led a small group against an occupied hill, where he single-handedly killed 2 snipers, wiped out two machine gun nests, killing another German soldier and capturing a mortar emplacement. A Creek Indian who was orphaned as a teen, Childers enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard in 1937. During the battle for Sicily he was given a battlefield commission and later took part in the actions that earned him the MOH and the Anzio Campaign. He retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
