(1924-2004) Marine Officer Awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions on Iwo Jima. While a Company Commander with the 5th Marine Division. Defying uninterrupted blasts of artillery, mortar, rifle and machinegun fire, Dunlap led his troops from a low ground uphill toward heavily defended cliffs. When the advance was stopped by enemy fire from caves above, he advanced alone approximately 200 yards to the base of a cliff 50 yards from Japanese lines. Getting a fix on the enemy machineguns he returned to his lines and relayed the positions. Over a 2 day and 2 night period he led his men in constant combat often taking fully exposed positions in order to direct fire and as his comrades died around him. For this cool action, courage and daring tactics he was awarded the Medal of Honor. Sig., with Medal of Honor notation, rank and Iwo Jima notation
