Mary McCarthy (1912-89) Novelist, Writer and Critic. Began writing criticism for the Nation and the New Republic (1933-37) and from 1937-48 she was the drama critic for the Partisan Review. The second of her four husbands was Edmund Wilson who encouraged her to write fiction. Her novels include The Company She Keeps, The Oasis, The Groves of Academe and The Group, which was her most successful book and was later made into a film. In 1957 she wrote a highly acclaimed autobiography. Memories of a Catholic Girlhood and in the 1960s she was the center of great controversy with her critiques of the Vietnam War.
