(1927-2008) Texas Political Figure, Ambassador to England, Counselor to Presidents Nixon and Ford, Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee. Married to Tobin Armstrong, she began working in grassroots Republican politics where she was on the Texas State Committee (1961-66) and was Vice Chairperson for years. She attended all Republicans Conventions from 1964-94 and was the first Woman to Keynote a Republican Convention. From 1971-73 she was Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee, the first woman to hold the post. The following year Jean Westwood would become the first woman to Chair a party by herself. In 1973 Nixon appointed her Counselor to the President with Cabinet Status, a position she briefly kept in the Ford White House. In 1976 Ford appointed her the First Woman to serve as Ambassador to Great Britain, and she served until Carter came into power the following year. Armstrong has been a member of a number of important commissions and boards including Chair of the President's Foreign Intelligence Board under Reagan and a member of the Hart-Rudman Commission that looked into homeland security, predicted a 9/11-type attack, and was ignored. President Reagan awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for being an "intrepid fighter¿against intrusion by big government." In 1959, Armstrong, who had suffered years of migraine headaches, went to a public speech by a hypnotist. Volunteering to be hypnotized, she groaned, moaned and cried. Following this she began seeing the hypnotist who discovered she was actually the reincarnation of Antonius, a famed Roman athlete and Caesar's bodyguard who had remained loyal to him and was tortured and later executed. After studying the life of Antonius and further hypnotism, her migraines declined. In 2006 her home became the scene of Vice President Cheney's hunting accident and her daughter, Katherine, helped muddy the waters when she said things like this were common, blamed the victim and lied about alcohol use by the hunters. It appeared from reports in the press that Anne Armstrong was one of the "cooler heads" in the publicity debacle.
