Peter Jennings (1938-2005) Later to become one of America¿s most beloved and respected commentators. (2) John Scali (1918-95) Then State Department Correspondent. Scali came to international prominence during the Cuban Missile Crisis when he was contacted by KGB Station Chief Aleksandr Fomin of the Soviet Embassy and was asked by him to use his White House connections to relay a message to the U.S. Executive Committee, which Scali did. However, it later became known that he took it upon himself to "bluff" the Russians, relaying a message back claiming that the U.S. was only hours away from invading Cuba. History has shown that that this could have plunged the world into nuclear war. Scali"s role in the Crisis has, in recent years, been downplayed as it has become known that the Crisis, despite the tough talk and serious plans to attack Cuba, the actually Crisis was ended by a tradeoff of missiles with Khruschev allowing JFK to take credit for the Soviet backoff. Scali later served as Foreign Affairs advisor to Nixon, who also appointed him as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations where he served from 1973-74. In 1975 he returned to ABC and spent the rest of his career. Don North The Vietnam Correspondent. North started out in ABC radio in New York and then became a war correspondent, covering the war in Borneo where he was embedded with British and Ghuka troops fighting the Indonesian guerrillas. He is most noted for his wartime coverage in Vietnam where he later said that there was disinformation on all sides. He also covered wars in the Mid-East, the Balkans, the Columbian Drug War and was with the Northern Alliance during the War in Afghanistan. In 1967 he was awarded the Ben Grauer Award for "Best Radio News from Abroad." In 1994 while doing a piece on Iraq he obtained a copy of a video showing Saddam's henchmen cutting of opponent's hands. He made a copy and brought it to world. North is also known as an independent filmmaker and lecturer. Bob Young - The London Correspondent. Young had a long career at the network and was the Host of ABC New Reports in 1963, and in 1968 was Anchor of ABC Evening News. John Rolfson - Then Paris Correspondent and Sam Jaffe, then Hong Kong Correspondent. The Commonwealth was the ¿Official Journal of the Commonwealth Club of California with this issue being 8 pages.
