(1906-2005) Actor, WW II Hero and Environmental Activist. One of the great modern supporting actors, often (with a few notable exceptions) in friendly, easygoing roles. Prior to becoming an actor, Albert was a trapeze flier and circus aerialist; immediately prior to and after America's entry into World War II he put these skills to use monitoring Axis intrigues throughout California and Mexico under the guise of a circus performer. Later in the war, while serving in the Navy, he took part in the bloody battle of Tarawa, where he braved enemy fire 26 times to save 70 Marines (some sources put the figures as high as 168), for which he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross with Combat "V". From a young age he was an advocate of sound ecological practices, and when it came time to set the date for the first International Earth Day it was April 28th, his birthday, that was picked. Yet another of Albert's many distinctions is that he starred in the first live television experimental broadcast, held in June of 1936 by RCA and NBC officials to gage the potential of TV! Long married to actress Margo, they were the parents of actor Edward Albert. On screen as "Oliver Wendell Douglas" on TV"s Green Acers and Petticoat Junction, sadistic "Warden Hazen" in The Longest Yard, Teahouse Of The August Moon, Roman Holiday, The Heartbreak Kid, The Longest Day, Attack, Oklahoma, The Sun Also Rises, etc. Signed Card
