(1962- ) Singer, Dancer, Choreographer & TV Personality. Former head cheerleader for the L.A. Lakers, she became a top music video choreographer for The Jacksons (and later sister Janet), ZZ Top, Debby Gibson, George Michael and many others. In 1988 she recorded her first solo album, Forever Your Girl, which made her a Pop superstar, spawning six #1 hits and winning her a Grammy. Later albums were less successful and she was forced to fight a lawsuit from a former backup singer who claimed (unsuccessfully) that it was she and not Abdul who sung on the hit singles. During this period Abdul began to suffer from a rare, pain inducing illness called Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, which she chose to hide rather than take the chance that it could hinder her career. Her music career on hiatus she returned to choreography, winning two Emmys for her TV work. In 2002 she was picked to be one of the three celebrity judges on Fox TV Pop/Reality show American Idol, which quickly became a cultural phenomenon and rocketed her back to stardom.
