(1906-2001) Born in London, Beame came to New York where he became an accountant and accounting teacher. In politics he was Assistant Budget Director under Mayor O'Dwyer, Budget Director under Impellitteri and Comptroller in 1962. In 1965 he ran unsuccessfully for Mayor but was again elected Comptroller in 1969. In 1973 he was elected the first Jewish Mayor of New York but the city was on the verge of bankruptcy and he was forced to slash budgets and lay off 65,000 city employees. President Ford refused to bail out New York which led to the famed headline, "Ford To New York: Drop Dead," but Beame was able to stave off bankruptcy.
